Roman Camp Hotel
The Roman Camp Hotel in Perthshire is a romantic historic hideaway with a top AA three-rosette restaurant, a riverside setting, and a celebrity guest list.
This romantic country house hotel, perfectly located for visitors to the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park in Scotland, has a long and fascinating history. It doesn’t quite go back to Roman times, as the name comes from a nearby Roman earthworks, but it was built in 1625 as a manor house used for the hunting of wild boar on the estates of the Earl of Moray. It was later bought by Viscount Esher who extended it considerably, and it has been a hotel since 1939.
Romantic Grounds and Riverside Setting
Guests don’t leave the natural beauty of their Scottish surroundings behind them when they arrive at the Roman Camp. Hidden through a narrow entrance off the Main Street of Callander is a Garden of Eden, with a riverside walk through huge mature trees, a walled garden, and 20 acres in all of gardens and parkland to wander through.
A riverside walk in the early evening, watching moorhens and mallards, and a heron standing still in the shadows of a tree at the edge of the lovely River Teith, is the perfect pre-dinner stroll. Hopefully followed by the perfect dinner.
Acclaimed AA Three-Rosette Restaurant
The Roman Camp Hotel has the AA’s top rating for restaurants in Britain: Three Rosettes. They open for lunch with a modestly-priced set-price three-course lunch, preceded by canapés and with coffee and petits fours included. A typical main course might be a fillet of turbot, served with grain mustard risotto and a shellfish reduction.
The Roman Camp’s dinner menu is even more elaborate and changes daily, whether guests choose the fixed-price option or a la carte. There is also the rare bonus for vegetarians of a set-price vegetarian menu with dishes such as a ragout of mushrooms, leeks and gnocchi with grain mustard sauce. The chef is also happy to accommodate individual requests, for those guests who might prefer something simpler than his elaborate and mouthwatering creations.
Hotel Celebrity Guest List
Many famous names have stayed and dined at the Roman Camp Hotel, as it offers perfect seclusion, luxury rooms, and fabulous food in a beautiful part of Scotland. The Beatles stayed here one time, and a copy of a sketch done then by John Lennon of the Fab Four is on display in the bar. From Prime Ministers to modern soap stars, by way of people including Paul Merton, Peter O’Toole, Charlton Heston, Bette Midler, and Robert Duval, have all stayed at this historic and romantic country house hotel.
