Hôtel Notre-Dame
36-38 rue Notre-Dame, 33000 Bordeaux
05 56 52 88 24
hotelbordeauxchartrons.com
€
Well located in the historic Chartrons district of wine dealers and antique shops, the Notre-Dame is the kind of French hotel that belies its modest 3-star rating. The rooms are simple, comfortable and clean, and they all have cable TV, WiFi, phone, and a hair dryer. The rooms are colourfully-decorated, and some are on the small side, but the hotel is in a beautifully-restored 19th-century mansion, and that more than makes up for it.
Hôtel Des Quatre Soeurs
6 cours du 30-Juillet, 33000 Bordeaux

In a perfect location close on the place de la Comédie just a few doors down from the Tourist Information Office, the 3-star Quatre Soeurs has been here since the 18th century. A portrait of Richard Wagner hangs by the front door, as the composer was a guest here in 1850. Book a room at the front if you can, as they are much bigger and brighter than the interior rooms that overlook an inner courtyard.
La Maison Bord’eaux
113 rue Albert Barraud, 33000 Bordeaux
05 56 44 00 45

This boutique hotel is a short walk north of the city centre, a walk worth making as the rooms here are chic, with calming colours and a cool sophistication about them. They all look over the courtyard garden, and have free internet access. The building dates from the 18th century but was totally renovated in September 2020 and combines the old with the new perfectly. As well as being a designer, the owner belongs to a wine-making family and private visits to the château and cellars can be arranged.
Hôtel Mercure Bordeaux Cité Mondiale Centre-Ville

Tucked away in the Cité Mondial, set back slightly from the riverfront, the Mercure is a good mid-range option between the city centre and the Chartrons district. It’s modern and big with 97 rooms, though the friendly little reception desk makes it feel much more homely. There’s also a fabulous rooftop breakfast terrace with impressive city views.
Hôtel de Sèze
7 rue de Sèze, 33000 Bordeaux

Very central 18th-century mansion, with lots of wood-panelling, mirrors and chandeliers, the de Sèze has simply but attractively decorated modern rooms. There is also a sister hotel next door, the Royal Médoc (same website), to a similar standard and price.
Hôtel la Tour Intendance
14 rue de la Vieille Tour, 33000 Bordeaux

Charmingly individual 3-star hotel on a pedestrianised street close to the place Gambetta. The rooms in the main building are plain but comfortable, and those in an annex round the corner more stylishly decorated but smaller… and there’s no lift. A good affordable choice, with friendly and accommodating owners.
