One of the longest-established best hotels in the city, where members of the Scotland rugby team sometimes stay, the Balmoral offers 5-star luxury and is a distinguished landmark itself, on Princes Street. It’s right by the tourist information centre, and can boast a first class restaurant in Number One, which has four AA rosettes. With its top spa facilities too, little wonder that scarcely a month goes by without the hotel winning one award or another.

€€

A favourite of the Scotland rugby team, who come here to make use of the superb spa facilities, the Sheraton is within sight of Edinburgh Castle and a short stroll from the western end of Princes Street. There are plenty of good eating places around, although with three restaurants, two bars, and an Executive Lounge, you may not need to venture outside. The rooms are as comfortable as you would expect from a 5-star hotel, and the hotel is a happy mix of luxury and tradition.

The fabulous One Spa is the official spa of the Scotland Rugby Team. Europe’s most advanced city spa, it has won the industry’s prestigious Destination Hotel/Spa of the Year award numerous times. The rooftop Hydropool affords a wonderful view of Edinburgh’s skyline from its outdoor section. Among other features are an exotic Thermal Suite with a range of aromatic heat and cooling therapies, a 19-metre ozone swimming pool, the Cleopatra Baths, treatment rooms, and a state-of-the-art gym.

Right on the Royal Mile and only five minutes from Waverley Station is the visually stunning Radisson Blu. Although it’s a modern hotel it looks like a medieval building, and inside is equally striking. All rooms are distinguished by having black-and-white art photos of the city and surrounds by a local photographer, and (rare for a large chain hotel) free high-speed internet access.

This really delightful family-run hotel offers visitors 11 large, comfortable rooms with complimentary sherry and whisky decanters when you arrive, and free wifi internet access. It’s on the south side of the city with regular buses or a 30-minute walk into the centre, and owner David Hinnrichs is a passionate rugby fan who’s happy to share his knowledge about the local rugby scene.

Murrayfield Hotel

themurrayfieldhotel.co.uk

This is an ideal base if you want to be near Murrayfield Stadium for the rugby, as you can’t get much closer, and the rugby bars are all around – including the Murrayfield’s own. There are thirty rooms split between the main building and the adjacent lodge, and they’re simple but have all mod cons. The private car park is a bonus in Edinburgh, and it’s only a 15-minute walk or quick bus ride or taxi into the centre.
