This lovely old 2-star hotel is good if you’re driving into Montpellier as it has its own car park and is north of the city centre, but you can easily walk into the heart of the city in 10-15 minutes, or there’s a tram. It’s an 18th-century Languedoc mansion that once belonged to the Earl Vivier de Châtelard, but the 16 rooms are modern, stylish, and all have air-conditioning and either a balcony or a terrace.

Only a few minutes’ walk from the place de la Comédie, and on the edge of the Antigone district, the 3-star Mercure is a reliable and comfortable modern choice. There are 120 rooms, a bar, a brasserie and a pleasant breakfast patio. The hotel does have more of a stylish look to it than similar business hotels, and the staff are very friendly, perhaps because they’re lucky enough to live in Montpellier.
Hôtel le Guilhem

€€
The Guilhem is wonderfully positioned in a renovated 16th-century mansion in a quiet traffic-free street right in the heart of the medieval city centre. This 3-star Best Western hotel has 36 incredibly comfortable air-conditioned rooms, all of them different, all of them plush. There’s also a dining room and a garden for breakfast when it’s fine. Some rooms have lovely views over this old part of the city.

It’s a 4-star hotel in the grand hotel style, but with luxurious modern rooms with wifi, satellite TV, mini-bar and so on. The three Deluxe rooms all have views of the Place de la Comédie.

There are thirteen rooms and two suites (one with a private pool) in this Relais & Chateaux hotel that’s some way north of the city centre. It’s chicer than chic, designed by Bruno Borrione, who worked for Philippe Starck – and it shows. It has its own swimming pool and a restaurant that is acclaimed in its own right, focussing on the cuisine of Languedoc, Le Jardin des Sens.
