The Hôtel LIFE is in an 18th-century building in a perfect spot overlooking the Vieux Port and the quai des Belges, although you’ll have to pay a little extra for a room with a port view. Although the Hermes is only a 2-star hotel, it’s a great little place right on the Vieux Port. Try to get either the Nuptial or the Terrace Room, which both have terrific views across the harbour to Notre-Dame high above. There’s a roof terrace too, and all 29 rooms have AC and soundproofing. The whole place was renovated not long ago and belies that 2-star rating.

Maisons du Monde Hôtel & Suites

This chic and slick hotel has a 4-star rating, and fully deserved. Sixteen of its 56 air-conditioned rooms look right over the western end of the Vieux Port, where the morning fish market is, a perfect place to be based. The design is modern and stylish without being cold in any way, and it’s definitely one of the best options down by the harbour.

The 3-star Mercure Marseille Centre Prado is one of the best options if you want to be near the Vélodrome stadium, as it’s only a stroll away, as is the Congress Centre. It’s also handy for the beach if that appeals more than hanging out in the heart of Marseille city. The 100 rooms are typically modern and comfortable – no surprises but a safe choice if you’re not especially looking for a lot of character.
